Fretboard Fusion

Electric Guitar & Bass Workshop

Fretboard Fusion is an immersion experience for advancing guitarists and electric bassists who want to take their jazz fusion skills to the next level. A must for any guitarist or bassist who is serious about improving their musicianship whilst playing really fun music!

A Partnership Between SGMA and MGS

Dan Duval is a guitarist, teacher, bandleader, and composer, and founder of Shadow Government Music Academy. Neil Mattson is a guitarist, composer, and educator, and founder of Montavilla Guitar Studio.

Dan and Neil have teamed up to create Jazz Workshops that address the needs of advancing guitarists and electric bassists by teaching real-world musical skills such as how to work well with others in an ensemble, how to improvise over chord changes, and most importantly how to master the entire fretboard!

5 Day Workshops

Students will explore songs by Miles Davis (electric period), Mahavishnu Orchestra, Medeski Martin and Wood, Frisell, Scofield, and more. The week long workshop culminates in a concert and features students performing with local professionals in supporting roles. Along the way students will learn what it takes to develop pro chops, acquire studio musician reading skills, play shredding leads (while hitting the changes), and take their first steps toward total fretboard mastery.

Found Neil and Montavilla Guitar Studio through a neighborhood Facebook page. He has been giving our 8 year old daughter private guitar lessons for 3 months now, with great patience and so many fun, innovative teaching techniques! His studio/teaching space is cozy and welcoming, he clearly enjoys teaching lessons, and has a natural knack for working with children–which is no small feat. We have been incredibly pleased with the caliber of teacher we’ve found in Neil. If you are just beginning lessons, he also offers a complimentary “find a guitar” session where he meets you at a local guitar shop to pick an instrument that’ll work well. Great way get a newbie musician excited about what’s to come!
