Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from Earlham College. As a working multi-instrumentalist and producer/engineer, he’s toured the US in rock and jazz groups, produced multiple records, composed music for TV and film, and currently leads his group !mindparade. Alex’s well-rounded teaching approach helps students discover their special interest, then teaches them technique and music theory to accomplish their goals.
What age were you when you first started taking music lessons?
I began taking piano lessons at age 6.
Tell us about an early music lessons experience that helped shape you as a musician or teacher:
In high school, I studied classical guitar for 4 years with Sulaiman Zai in Bloomington, Indiana. He helped me learn the ins and outs of the guitar via performance, theory, and technique, and encouraged me to study improvisation and composition.
What are your favorite bands or musicians?
The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Deerhoof, Frank Zappa, Bela Bartok, Maurice Ravel, JohnMcLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra, 60’s/70’s Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, (I could go on!). All of these musicians influenced me in various ways in terms of composition, improvisation, and as a player. But overall, they have shows me that it is possible to develop one’s own idiosyncratic voice through music, and that the world will respond to that!
Do you have a highlight of your music career so far that you would like to share?
I’ve toured the USA in multiple bands, performing in venues big and small, and getting to open for artists like The Wailers and Trombone Shorty. There’s nothing like getting to travel and do what you love at the same time.
Describe your ideal student.
My ideal student is someone who is eager to learn, open to digging into music theory, and hungry for practice.
Describe what your students should expect in their first few music lessons.
Within the first few lessons I expect to pinpoint the direction of music that the student would like to pursue. We will then work together to develop a plan of study and practice that matches that student’s goals. This will include basic theory, performance technique, and starting to learn a tune or two that will set the student in the right direction!
