Lauren Hatch
Lauren (she/her) started playing piano as a child. She was classically trained but discovered jazz as a teenager and realized that playing music with other people is not only fun, but also a good way to make friends. She has spent the last twenty years playing in various bands and ensembles. Lauren empowers students to explore their musical path and achieve their goals through patient and step by step instruction.
What age were you when you first started taking music lessons?
8 years old
Tell us about an early music lessons experience that helped shape you as a musician or teacher:
My first piano teacher was exactly 60 years older than me (we shared a birthday). Her back door was always unlocked before a lesson (it was the 90s) and you just let yourself in and went down to her basement when it was your appointed time. She would often be playing the piano when I opened that door and I remember trying to walk down the stairs as quietly as I could so she wouldn’t stop playing. I loved listening to her and wanted to be able to play piano like she did.
What are your favorite bands or musicians?
I love all kinds of music, from classical to heavy metal. David Bowie is a big influence. Lately I’ve been into early synth music (like “Plantasia” by Mort Garson). But I’m not above listening to pop music, I think I’ve had Beyonce’s “Renaissance” album on in my car at least once a week since it came out.
Do you have a highlight of your music career so far that you would like to share?
I play in an all-femme Bowie cover band called Major Tomboys. A big highlight is looking into the audience at those shows and watching people sing along.
Describe your ideal student.
My ideal student is someone who is excited to learn and is willing to put in the practice time. They would also have access to a recently tuned piano or a keyboard with weighted keys so they could get the most out of their practice sessions. It would be someone who is ready to nerd out about music and isn’t scared off by theory.
Describe what your students should expect in their first few music lessons.
In the first few lessons, we will figure out what you already know and go from there. If we are starting from the beginning, we’ll cover the basics of reading music and piano techniques. I’ll ask you some questions about what kind of music you’re interested in and devise a plan based on your answers. We’ll probably play some classical stuff as well as some more contemporary pieces.
Why did you want to become a music teacher?
Music has always been a really important part of my life and I want to share my knowledge with others.
